The Vogue Paris Original Story

Introduced in 1949, Vogue Paris Original brought the designs of leading Paris fashion houses to home dressmakers in pattern form.

These were no ordinary sewing patterns. Vogue selected designs from the collections of Paris couturiers and translated them into patterns that allowed skilled dressmakers to recreate remarkably sophisticated fashion at home.

The earliest Vogue Paris Original releases featured designers including Pierre Balmain, Jacques Fath, Jacques Heim, Lanvin, Molyneux, Paquin, Robert Piguet and Schiaparelli. In the decades that followed, the series documented the work of many of the names that defined twentieth-century Paris fashion.

Today, surviving examples offer something increasingly rare: an original connection between the couture collections of Paris and the culture of home dressmaking.

Made to Be Worn

Many Vogue Paris Original patterns were originally supplied with a woven Vogue Paris Original sew-in label, intended to be stitched into the finished garment.

Where an original label survives with a Patterned pattern, we record it individually in the listing.

These small labels are a particularly evocative part of the history of the series — a finishing touch that transformed a beautifully handmade garment into the maker’s own Paris Original.
