The Vogue Couturier Design Story

Vogue’s Couturier line dates to the 1930s, when it emerged as one of the company’s most prestigious pattern ranges.

The earliest Couturier patterns did not identify an individual designer. As the series evolved, Vogue Couturier Design became a showcase for leading designers working beyond the Paris fashion houses represented by Vogue Paris Original.

Italian, Spanish, British, Irish and other international designers brought their own distinct approaches to silhouette, tailoring and construction to the series, creating an unusually rich record of twentieth-century fashion in pattern form.

Today, surviving Vogue Couturier Design patterns offer makers and collectors an original connection to the designers, techniques and ideas that shaped international fashion.

An International View of Couture

Where Vogue Paris Original celebrated the great fashion houses of Paris, Vogue Couturier Design looked further afield.

Designers such as Emilio Pucci, Fabiani, Galitzine, Pertegaz, Sybil Connolly, Jo Mattli and Jean Muir brought dramatically different fashion identities to the series — from precise tailoring and sculptural eveningwear to bold colour, modern separates and increasingly relaxed silhouettes.

Together, the patterns reveal how widely couture influence travelled — and how Vogue translated those ideas for skilled dressmakers around the world.
