What Makes a Pattern Rare & Collectable?
Not every old pattern is rare — and not every rare pattern is valuable for the same reason.
Some are especially desirable because of the designer name: a Paris couturier, a Vogue American Designer, or an important ready-to-wear name. Others are prized for their scarcity, such as unusual series, hard-to-find sizes, lesser-seen pattern companies, or short-lived lines.
Condition can matter too. Factory Folded examples, original transfers, unusual inserts, sew-in labels, striking envelope illustration and beautifully preserved tissue can all add to a pattern’s appeal.
At Patterned, the Rare & Collectable edit brings these qualities together — not simply because a pattern is old, but because it holds particular interest for collectors, makers and lovers of fashion history.
Chosen for the Archive
Some patterns are notable for the fashion house behind them.
Some for the elegance of the design itself.
Some because they survive in unusually beautiful condition.
Others tell a broader story: the rise of designer sewing patterns, the spread of couture influence, the changing silhouette of each decade, or the remarkable visual language of vintage pattern illustration.
The Rare & Collectable collection is where these standout pieces are gathered together — a curated selection of patterns with something special to say.
For Makers & Collectors
Whether chosen to sew, study, display or collect, rare patterns offer a deeper connection to the history of dressmaking.
A scarce evening pattern may preserve a dramatic silhouette not often seen today.
A designer pattern may offer insight into the work of an important fashion name.
A beautifully preserved envelope may be as compelling visually as the garment it contains.
For some, these patterns are working documents. For others, they are archive objects. For many, they are both.
